ABS NS ChemSTOW Finalist
In 2002 SeaTrade Award For
New IT Applications For The Shipping Industry

February 25, 2002

The carriage of chemicals by sea is becoming increasingly complex. Chemical tanker stowage planning has grown in importance because of the long list of bulk liquids carried by sea and numerous evolving rules governing the transportation. Using IT to help operators with a variety of operation challenges is the mission of ABS Nautical Systems. Their suite of integrated software for the marine and offshore industry offers clients a fully integrated, modular approach to managing all the principal operational expenses associated with a vessel or offshore rig, ranging from crew payroll to purchasing, to maintenance and repair. SafeNet is currently installed aboard several thousand vessels ranging from tug boats to vlccs.

The SafeNet ChemSTOW module has been shortlisted as one of the finalists in one of four award categories in the prestigious annual SeaTrade Awards. It is being recognized for an award in the "New Applications For The Shipping Industry" category.

Some of the major factors to consider with chemical carriage are: the adjacent stowage of chemicals due to dangerous reactivity, cross-overs between tanks, the chemical reaction to the coatings inside a tank and its piping, the heating requirement of a cargo and the effects on other adjacent cargoes plus the history of a tank with respect to previous cargoes carried. SafeNet ChemSTOW is a comprehensive software package that addresses these issues and more. The commercial value this software brings to owners and operators is that they can maximize revenue for each vessel by optimizing planning and stowage of chemical parcels.

The winner of the SeaTrade Award in IT will be announced at the SeaTrade Award ceremony in London on April 22.
